Basses

A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Erik Abrams moved to Texas to attend the University of Houston and remained actively involved in the Moores School of Music choral program and voice studios while completing his BS in computer science. He is the Quality and Training manager for an international IT Services company, responsible for ensuring analysts have the knowledge and skill sets necessary to provide positive customer-service experiences, while engaged on client-focused projects in pursuit of his Project Management Professional certification. In addition to being a founding member of the Sons of Orpheus men's chorus, Erik and his wife Jamie have enjoyed making music together for the past decade in choirs across the Houston area.


Barry Barrios

Barry Barrios, a native of Winnie, Texas, is the Director of Music and Worship Arts at First United Methodist Church in Katy, Texas since 1990. Since moving to Houston in 1986, he has performed in over sixteen Theatre Under the Stars productions including Most Happy Fella, Jesus Christ Super Star, Evita (twice) The Merry Widow, TBLWIT, and Chess. Barry also performed with HGO' s Education and Outreach company Opera to Go from 1989 – 1999, serving as Artistic Director for many of those years. He has performed in many countries with various local choirs including the Houston Chamber Choir, and is very honored to be an "almost charter member" of CANTARE Houston (missing it by one inaugural concert) and is particularly proud of Kevin Riehle and the CANTARE vision.

Gary Buster

Gary Buster has sung sacred and secular formats in the East Texas region under several distinguished directors including Edwardo Mata, Lloyd Pfautsch, Constantina Tsolainou, David Davidson, Richard Herr, Kevin Riehle, Frode Gunderson, Per Brevig, Kate Tamarkin, and Tom Allen. He has enjoyed singing contralto, baritone, bass, and basso profundo venues with Dallas Symphony Orchestra Chorus, Opera East Texas, East Texas Symphony Chorus, Tyler Chamber Chorale, Houston's Cantare, and Texas Vocal Arts Ensemble. Gary was raised in the Dallas area, attended school in Houston, and currently makes his home in east Texas.


Steve Driver

Steve Driver, Bass, B.A. – Music, J.D. Steve grew up singing in the Baptist choir in Austin, TX. He was a member of the Austin Boys Choir and then the St. Steve’s Episcopal School Madrigal Singers before attending UT Austin for his undergraduate Music studies. There he continued his choral activities, travelling to Brazil with the UT Chamber Singers under Craig Hella Johnson. Steve also studied opera at UT under William Rhodes and William Lewis. He performed the roles of Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte and Herr Buffo in Der Schauspieldirektor throughout Austria and the Czech Republic while attending the Austrian American Mozart Academy in Austria. Steve has a lifelong love of the stage and has enjoyed singing roles in musical theater, including, Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof. In order to support his musical habits, Steve went to Law school and is now an Assistant District Attorney in Harris County. Steve has sung with many local groups, including the Houston Masterworks Chorus, the Houston Symphony Chorus, and the Houston Men’s Consort. In June of 2009, Steve went to Rome where he performed under the baton of Sir David Wilcox and Paul Leddington Wright in the International Church Music Festival Choir. Steve is an active in the Adult choir of Spring Woods United Methodist Church, where his wife, Ashlie, is the Director. Steve met Ashlie while they were both singing in the chorus of The Marriage of Figaro at UT. They married a few years later, are now the proud parents of three beautiful (and musical) children and are charter members of Cantare Houston.


Brendan Emig

Brendan Emig, Bass-Baritone, is a recent graduate of the University of Cincinnati's College Conservatory of music and Sam Houston State University. He is an active performer in both solo concert work and choruses in and around the Houston area. He currently sings with Palmer Episcopal Church and is a private voice instructor in the Clear Lake Area.


Jeremiah Joseph

Born and raised in the Houston area, Jeremiah Joseph is near completion of a degree from Houston Baptist University in Music Theory/Composition. His one act opera "ALYCE" premiered in fall of 2009 in Dunham Theater with Mezzo-Soprano Ashley Brooks. His latest commission, Dream Variations, a song cycle using texts of Langston Hughes premiered in spring of 2010 with soprano Melissa Givens and pianist Dan Kramlich. Joseph is a composition student of Dr. Ann Gebuhr, a conducting student of Dr. John Yarrington and a vocal student of Dr. Jason Lester. He is currently pianist and assistant to the worship pastor at Memorial Drive Baptist Church. 


Ty Lerman

Ty David Lerman returns for his second full season performing with CANTARE Houston, and first as the chorus' stage manager. He has extensive experience as a chorister singing with local groups such as Houston Masterworks Chorus, the Houston Tidelanders as well as various collegiate and church choirs. With an active career both in front of and behind the curtain, Ty has been stage managing for over seven years, including shows such as the Houston debut of Carlisle Floyd's Slow Dusk, Cosi Fan Tutte, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown!, Belles, Lots of Greed and Avarice Going Down, and numerous summer Opera Workshops at Lonestar College – Kingwood. Additionally, he has served the past three years as resident stage manager for Sing For Hope's annual fundraiser at the Wortham Center benefitting individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS through Bering Omega, raising over $850,000 since his involvement. Outside the art scene, Ty holds a master's degree in clinical psychology and is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Intern, National Certified Counselor, as well as a Certified Hypnotherapist. He is currently employed as a staff therapist with a local counseling center in the Anti-Violence Program.


Nick Likos

Nick Likos is the Assistant Choir Director at Cypress Ranch High School and one of Cantare's Section Leaders. Nick graduated from the University of Texas with high honors and a Bachelor's degree in Music Studies. Nick taught at Dekaney High School as the Assistant Choir Director for the past two years. While at Dekaney High School, he received Dekaney's first-ever Superior ratings on stage at UIL competition. Nick played an integral part in building the Dekaney Choir program from scratch - a school that opened in 2007. During his tenure, the program more than doubled in size. He is looking forward to taking that experience to Cypress Ranch.

While attending the University of Texas, he studied voice with David Small and conducting with Dr. Suzanne Pence. He was also a proud member of the UT Chamber Singers under the direction of Dr. James Morrow. As a member of the Chamber Singers, he traveled to Brazil and sang in three recordings with major industry labels.

Nick is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Choral Directors Association, the American Choral Directors Association and the National Association for Music Education.
