Season 16: Journeys

American Roads

Saturday, October 13th at 7:30 p.m.
First Evangelical Lutheran Church
1311 Holman Street, Houston, TX 77004

Cantare Houston begins its Season Sixteen journey with one of the earliest forms of American music – shape note singing and the works of William Billings. Our exploration continues with pioneers of American choral music, F. Melius Christiansen and Leonard Bernstein. We celebrate Bernstein’s birthday centennial with the French choruses from The Lark. The next road is paved with pieces by contemporary living composers such as Jake Runestad, Jocelyn Hagen, Tim Takach, and Daniel Elder. Finally, we travel the path of American spirituals and gospel music, honoring aural tradition – music learned entirely by rote – and the expansive works of Moses Hogan, who took African-American spirituals and made them accessible to choirs around the world.

Tickets are $40 per person,
$35 per person for seniors and MFAH/KUHF members,
$10 per person for students.
